The S2000 achieves an average of 18/25 mpg city/highway in the class of cheap sports cars. Reviewers praised the S2000’s excellent handling dynamics on twisty roads. On long journeys and rough roads, they did note that a firm suspension makes the ride uncomfortable.

The S2000 is unmistakably a Mazda Miata. This stylish machine flaunts a sculpted body design with seductively flared arches and looks terrific every day of the week. It seems to be set up and prepared to strike at any time. The S2000 CR is the only Honda S2000 with a hardtop. It goes even further with a racing-inspired retractable roof, seatback cowls, and a big rear wing. When a design can still seem significant over a decade later, it speaks volumes about its effectiveness; this design will never lose its appeal.
The standard version adds exterior features, including a dual-outlet exhaust system, an electrically operated soft top, still one of the fastest-dropping roofs available, and a remote entry system with an auto trunk release. To make the car lighter, it has a lightweight aluminum hood and 17-inch light alloy wheels, silver on the base model and gray on the CR.

Interior
We wouldn’t have it any other way because the S2000’s design philosophy forbids a luxurious interior. There are all the essentials, but that is all there is. The build quality is excellent, as with any high-end model from the manufacturer. Still, as the years go by, a few rattles and squeaks will enter the cabin, an unfortunate sign of that stiff suspension. The seats are well-bolstered and durable enough to withstand aggressive driving. Some amenities include a 12-volt outlet, an integrated rollover bar, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, air conditioning, cruise control, and a red-start button. The seat can be moved in four different directions. Eight speakers are included in the stock AM/FM/CD radio, some of which are built into the roll bars.
Whether you choose the rag-top or the hardtop S2000 CR, there are 44.3 inches of legroom and 34.6 inches of headroom. The difference between the basic model and the Club Racer is that the Club Racer has bolstered bucket seats covered in yellow and black fabric, while the basic model has thrones covered in black leather.

Engine
The 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine, dubbed the F20C, was standard equipment when the S2000 was first introduced in the US. Despite having a maximum rev limit of 9,000 rpm, this motor lacked the low-end torque that American drivers like. The engine was changed to a 2.2-liter mill with more twists and a somewhat lower top speed (8,000 rpm), but you couldn’t tell the difference if you looked inside the engine compartment. Even by 2009 standards, it was never swift, but despite that—and given its modest capacity four-banger—it still manages to impress.
The engine is capable of 237 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. Since the powertrain must enter the VTEC zone at roughly 6,000 rpm to fully begin moving, low-speed acceleration might be sluggish. However, this compromises fuel efficiency. The best shifting six-speed manual transmission you’ll ever drive transmits power to the rear end. Number-wise, it will finish the 0-60 mph sprint in the middle of the five-second range and resume to a top speed of 150 mph. The EPA estimates the vehicle’s mpg to be 18/25/21 for city/highway/combined, which is far from economical. Even so, this is slightly superior to the 17/24/20 mpg of the 350Z Roadster. The S2000 could travel for around 275 miles on a full 13.2-gallon fuel tank before finding a gas station.
