2024 Honda Civic Type R Specs, Redesign, Release Date – Even in its final year of production, the outgoing Honda Civic Type R set the standard for front-wheel-drive hot hatchbacks in the United States. The Volkswagen Golf GTI could argue otherwise, but the Type R’s more exciting driving personality won over many fans. It’s time for the new version to set even more stringent standards. The 2024 Honda Civic Type R engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit that produces 315 horsepower and a six-speed manual transmission. That makes it the most potent Honda ever sold in the United States. The look may be more subdued than the previous model, but we doubt the driving experience has been altered. The new Type R will need to be battle-ready in the United States, where Toyota will soon release the GR Corolla.
The new 2024 Honda Civic Type R has yet to be through our extensive testing. Still, it’s no secret that Honda’s hottest new hatch promises to offer the same fun as the outgoing model, if not more so, because of its increased power and refined aesthetic. Although the new CTR’s chassis is more extensive, it still rides on the smaller 19-inch wheels that were previously used on the previous generation and are now encased in wider Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. The brake cooling has been enhanced, and the front and rear tracks are more comprehensive. With its new 315-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and six-speed manual transmission, the CTR gets nine hp and 15 lb-ft of torque. The Type R’s lap recording and performance instruments are now accessible through the car’s 9.0-inch infotainment display, eliminating the need for a smartphone app.

2024 Honda Civic Type R Redesign
The new 2024 Honda Civic Type R takes cues for its exterior design from the more subdued Civic hatchback. The beefier body and the lightweight 19-inch wheels with the higher Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires make it clear that this variant is built with performance in mind. According to Honda, the “reverse rim” design of the new wheels improves the rigidity of the tire contact patch when the vehicle moves. The Type R is distinguished by its larger front fender grilles, redesigned side sills, and broader rear doors. There’s a honeycomb mesh grille, and it looks terrific, but the triple tailpipes and big spoiler in the back are where the car shows its aggression. Gloss black paint covers the wing spoiler, side mirrors, and fin-shaped antenna perched atop the roof. Badging is red, per Type R custom, and the Brembo calipers that stop the black wheels are also red.
The Honda Civic Type R color options include the company’s signature Championship White. Rallye Red and Crystal Black Pearl are the standard colors, while Sonic Gray Pearl and Boost Blue Pearl are the premium options.

Honda claims the new Type R is 0.80 inches longer, 0.5 inches lower, and 0.60 inches wider than the outgoing model due to its special aerodynamic touches. Even though the new Type R has a more refined look than its predecessor, its more aggressive sporting posture is because of these revisions. The hot hatchback is 180.9 inches long, 55.4 inches tall, and 74.4 inches wide. The Honda Civic Type R’s wheelbase measures 107.7 inches, an increase of 1.4 inches over the previous generation. One inch and 0.75 inches were added to the front and rear tracks to improve handling and straight-line stability.
The last generation of the Civic Type R came in at slightly over 3,100 pounds, so if Honda has managed to drastically reduce the curb weight of the new model, we should expect it to stay within this. However, the company still needs to make this statistic public.

Interior
If the standard Honda Civic Hatchback is any indication, the Type R’s cabin will be pretty high-quality. The latter’s cabin impressed us with its roominess, quality construction, and lack of a steep learning curve. Compared to other vehicles in its class, the second row of seats in this one has surprisingly spacious legroom. Thankfully, the ventilation system still uses physical controls on the interior, and the honeycomb strip covering the vents is a nice touch.
Red accents greet you as soon as you enter the cabin; this black and red color scheme is exclusive to the front seats and cannot be altered to match any exterior color. The seating position of the 2024 Honda Civic Type R is lower than in previous generations, and the seats are covered in a suede-like material that the manufacturer claims grips you tightly in high-G driving circumstances. The redesigned Type R has four cores instead of five, with a pair of cupholders located in the middle rear seat.
Many tuning options are available for those who want improved performance. The +R mode of the car’s navigation system has a brand-new set of gauges that show both the engine’s rpm graphically and the vehicle’s current gear. The Honda LogR datalogger has a timer for tracking lap times and collecting real-time data on the vehicle’s behavior. Videos of people driving can also be shared. The Type R comes with a Bose Centerpoint sound system and a nine-inch touchscreen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The base model also has a digital instrument cluster with a 10.2-inch screen, wireless charging, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane departure warning.

Engine
The following Type R won’t have a completely new chassis. Instead, it will have a slightly updated version of the one in the current generation. It is expected that the new Civic Type R, powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, will be more potent than the outgoing generation’s 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Despite its impressive performance, Honda has reaffirmed that a manual transmission will remain standard on the highest-end Civic. To us, that disqualifies a front suspension based on control arms, like the one seen on the Acura TLX. Instead, the front-wheel-drive Honda will likely keep its excellent dual-axis strut front suspension, which keeps the car from pulling to one side.
The following generation of the Civic Type R isn’t quite as visually aggressive, but it still features a massive rear wing and other aerodynamic additions. The 19-inch wheels on the new CTR are narrower and have a higher sidewall than the wheels on the last generation. Neither the Environmental Protection Agency nor Honda has released information on the 2024 Civic Type R’s city or highway fuel economy. With these estimates, we’ll be able to figure out the real-world mpg of the vehicle once we’ve had a chance to test one on our 75 mph highway fuel economy route, which is part of our rigorous testing process. The EPA website has details on the Civic Type R’s gas mileage.
